Chapter

Eight

“Well, I do believe that went well,” Shere Khan said once we returned to the Lion Kingdom. We were in the rose garden. my mates had gone into the castle to give us some privacy.

“Did it go well? I can’t really tell,” I said with a sigh.

“I’d say. I suspect that some of the other kingdom tours will go far worse than this one did,” he replied.

Great. I didn’t want to deal with any of them going bad, but I knew he was probably right.

“Which ones do you think will go worse?” I asked him.

“Well, I don’t believe the Tiger Kingdom tour will go well,” Shere Khan said.

“Do you think we can maybe just skip them? There’s no way in hell Queen Bria is going to give me her vote. My time would be better spent trying to convince the other royals to vote in my favor.”

“That’s probably right. But seeing as Queen Bria and King Roman are your mate’s parents, I do think it might be possible to sway their votes.”

“How?” I asked.

“Well, that all depends on Rafael’s willingness to cooperate. If he lets them know that he’ll forever hold it against them, they’ll probably be more willing to oblige.”

“Hmm.” The last thing I wanted to do was put a wedge between Raf and his parents.

Even though I couldn’t stand Queen Bria, she wasn’t a horrible shifter or a bad Queen. She hadn’t ruthlessly killed innocent students the way Ella Gray had.

No, Queen Bria may have been great to everyone else. Her biggest problem was simply the fact that she couldn’t stand me. She didn’t want me to taint the tiger shifter bloodline with my omnishifter blood. Her goal for Rafael’s life wasn’t for him to be happy; all she wanted was for him to end up with Anastasia Brink, the tiger shifter who she deemed to be from the highest quality bloodline.

“I think King Aloysius is going to be difficult,” Shere Khan went on.

“Me, too,” I agreed. “He seemed very annoyed by all of this.”

“Well, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed that. Did it make you wonder the same thing as me?”

“What?” I asked.

“Didn’t it make you think that there is a possibility that he might be the shifter who had the witch place the curse on you as a baby?” Shere Khan asked.

“No.” I allowed his words to sink in.“But if you’re right, then that would mean my mom is…” I trailed off.

If Shere Khan was right and King Aloysius was the one who had the curse placed on me, then that would have meant his wife was my bio mom.

The Queen of the Birds.

“Queen Wren just might be the mother who gave birth to you, Lena,” Shere Khan said with a smile, obviously proud that his observations and insights might have cracked the mystery.

“Might be,” I pointed out. “We don’t know this for a fact.” A light bulb went off in my head then. “The only way to know for sure would be the adoption papers.
